Why can't I hold my Leopard Gecko when it's young?

I've recently adopted or bought a leopard gecko from Petsmart. We were told that we couldn't hold the gecko right away, and bond with it. She also told us that you should start holding them and petting them when they're about 8 inches. Do reptiles really bond differently? I'm having troubles because it doesn't go into detail 'why' the geckos can't be held right away. I'm an owner of an outdoor dog and I'm so used to bonding with them right away so you'll be close as they grow up. Wouldn't a Leopard Gecko be scared of you or maybe even hate you if you don't bond with it when it's a smaller age? Please help!
